The Ethical Nature Of Integrity Essay - 1116 Words

Integrity is an important factor in determining a judge’s ability to fulfill their judicial duties. The integrity of judges relies substantially on their ability to uphold ethical standards, especially in difficult or controversial situations. Depending on the circumstances, some actions qualify as either ethical or unethical. However, some actions are always unethical regardless of the circumstance. Defining the ethical nature of some common practices helps to maintain a judge’s integrity. One of the most common unethical practices in any profession is the use of organizational resources for personal gains. Instances of such occurrence are always unethical despite the organization or the setting. As a result, judges that conduct personal businesses in the court chamber are in violation of the codes of conduct that define their profession. According to Canon Rule 4.01 of the United States codes of conduct by which judges abide, it is unethical for judges to use the courthouse for other purposes other than the accomplishment of the tasks that relate to their job title (American Bar Association, 2007). Instances of violation of this code of conduct often result in the public censuring of the judges. Judges do not have the mandate to send court employees on personal errands. Court employees are resources of the courthouse in relation to their roles in facilitating the judicial process (Swisher, 2016).
